Abstract

Garbage is a serious threat to humans because careless disposal of waste can cause environmental pollution. Poor waste management exacerbates this problem. To overcome this, a smart trash can based on an Arduino microcontroller is needed. This trash can uses an HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor to detect the distance and volume of trash, as well as a Servo to control the trash can lid. Capacitive Proximity Sensors are used to sort organic and inorganic waste. The buzzer and LED function as alarms and indicators when the trash can is full. The SIM800L V.2 GSM module is used to send SMS to officers when the trash can is full. This smart trash can has two compartments for organic and inorganic waste, as well as one entrance for disposing of waste. The trash can lid will open and close automatically when it detects human presence at a distance of 40 cm. If the waste is detected as organic, the servo will move to the left, whereas if it is not detected by the capacitive sensor, the servo will move to the right for inorganic waste. When the trash can is full, the buzzer will sound, the LED will light up, and an SMS will be sent to the officer. With this technology, waste management becomes more efficient and the environment becomes cleaner and healthier.
